Projektbeschreibung

The Russian bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics was won on the concept:
‘Gateway to the Future’. The Bolshoy Dome, a 12,000-seat venue also inspired
by the Russian’s iconic Fabergé egg, was built to host the ice hockey
events. After the Games, the dome will serve as an “ultra-modern, world-class
multi-purpose sports and entertainment centre.” The concept sketches and
form of the Arena for the bid book developed by Ruben Reddy Architects
and Botta Management (CH), its shape and even patterns of its exterior, resemble
Peter Carl Faberge’s 1897, Imperial Coronation Egg.

The Coronation Egg’s form is interpreted in the Arenas’ geometric ellipsoid
shape. The glazing wave-like curve has two extremum that are facing Olympic
park and Caucasus Mountains on one side and Black Sea on the other.
Glossy aluminium pearl colour panels cover the shell of the building reflecting
the surroundings and the changes of season.

The total surface area of the dome is 31 745 sqm with a maximum span
193m x142m and maximum height of 40m. The stylobate houses the athlete
zone, training arena, media centre, technological premises and parking.
