Erläuterungstext

kiruna; new town hall - stadshuset pĂĄ medborgartorget

The epic landscape surrounding Kiruna is a dramatic and inspiring scenography for planning the New Town Hall. The extreme climatic conditions create a fascinating contrasting place constantly influenced by the forces of nature - the cold dark winters’ strong winds and snow versus the bright mild summer months.
In the new setting of Kiruna, between the Travel Center and the New Town Hall - we created a representative, attractive and multi-functional square, called Civic Square. Together - the Town Hall and the Civic Square form Kiruna’s new public space and natural meeting point. The Square has a strong spatial and esthetical identity that connects the town hall with the future Sami Parliament.
One arrives to the New Kiruna Town Hall from the Civic Square. The building is shaped as a single volume with a simple angled edge towards the new city, and a soft embracing, inviting, organic shaped facade towards the new Civic Square. The facade towards the square is waving and divided in bands with slight color nuances in mother of pearl, light green, white and rose, resembling the aurelia borealis in the northern skies. In the summer’s long days the facade reflects the daylight as the human body moves across the Square. Whereas in the dark periods, one looks into the Town Hall’s warm interior – into “Kiruna’s Living Room” lit up and joyous as an ardent embrace.
When entering the building, firstly you meet the generous “Living Room” Space - formed between the façade to the Civic Square and the angled body of the building. The “Living Room”, the Art Museum, the Restaurant and the Attorney Hall are all placed so that openness, culture and democracy are the first and essential aspects visitors are greeted with. They are clear representatives of Kiruna’s strong and unique identity.
