Erläuterungstext

e[x]Sport is a composite name derived from: eSports + X-Port = e[x]Sports

Implicit in the name is the creation and exporting the Brand (for the new development and Seoul City) through rejuvenation of an Olympic Arena, adaptive reuse, reprogramming the Sports Complex (including eSports, alternate sports and other more hybrid type of programing). eX is also about exchange – imbibing the expressed desire by Seoul Metropolitan Government to transform the adjacent convention center and surrounding areas into an International Exchange District.

Learning from the other previous Olympic venues and what happens after the Games to such huge investments made by the host nations, e[x]Sport proposes to retain, revise, redesign, preserve, adapt and expand existing sporting activities and structures while bringing in other forms of hybrid programming to make the area more viable, culturally integrated and economically sustainable for the city of Seoul and the nation. The site presents major challenges due to its highly specific and insular nature, yet it is capable of generating unique enthusiasm and interest in the local, national and international communities as it can also present lucrative commercial, cultural and tourism opportunities. Our aim is to position the project in the wider context of the city, the convention center to the west, business communities and the waterfront to show how it can transform itself through good urban design, improve housing and transportation and play a role in the continued sustainability of the environment, local communities, business and education. Furthermore, the provision of world-class facilities can inspire a generation of new athletes and immediately improve the quality of sports coaching to support them. However, social and sporting benefits have to be measured against the bottom line financial cost.

Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht

The project dramatically changes the landscape of the site by creating a large circle with the Main Stadium as the center and proposing geometric axes for various programs such as convention axis, cultural axis, and urban axis. It shows the possibility of multi-uses including even the car racing speedway, while leaves the periphery vacant.
