CONCEPT
A compact building of cubic shape, resembling a diamond and rotated 45o. A cost-efficient landmark structure well-integrated into the existing green environment and the local urban context. Sitting on a crucial spot, a cross point at the main pedestrian axes, and a reference for the East gate to balance the whole area together with the Natural History Museum.
CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
Structure
— reinforced concrete rectangular 25 cm columns organized in two crowns, one on the outside integrated with the façade, and an inner one;
— post stressed concrete 35 cm slabs. Thickness minimized by using the cantilever towards the atrium; columns receive only vertical loads;
— use of a post-stressed structure decreases the total weight, pressure on foundations and the structural costs by avoiding almost any kind of vertical structure.
Foundation
— concrete walls with a thickness of 30 cm around the perimeter to hold the ground;
— concrete 20 cm foundation on top of a grave layer.
Facade
—a double façade of graphite aluminum panels and and an interior layer made of metal sheet and transparent glass.
CLEANROOM AND LABORATORIES
— cleanrooms and laboratory spaces equipped with a wide range of facilities and equipment aimed at ensuring correct environmental conditions and sustainable energy consumption.
ENGINEERING AND SUSTAINABILITY
— main technical equipment located on the technical roof and in the basement;
— main shafts centralized close to the technical elevator together with the shelter and the server’s room, smaller ones equally distributed at each of the four quadrants of the plan;
— continuity of the corridors and the empty diagonal that cross the building allow to produce cross ventilation conceived mainly for heat but also usable for cold;
— system of control and regulation of the lighting with solar energy;
— recovered waters;
Total structural volume / Gross area Illustrates the solution with relation to maintenance expenditures. Index between 5.0 and 6.0 predicts the lowest expenditures for ventilation and temperature control.
Total Gross Area (m2): 6 168, Building height (m) 23.9 GEOMETRY
