CONCEPT
A site within the site. Form and function of the building embody the complex relationship between science, humans and nature. A move away from the rigid division between the disciplines towards a flexible solution that opens the channels of communication, opportunities for advancements and the evolution of science.
CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
Structure
— single structure without expansion joints;
— building systems varying between the north and south volume due to the different uses
and configurations of the spaces;
— north volume consisting of concrete flat plate construction with drop panels to improve the slab performance and shear walls at the stair shafts for additional stiffness;
— south volume featuring a concave-shaped façade with additional curved concrete walls to support the inner columns and create a column-free space, concrete diaphragms providing horizontal restraince to stabilize the structure.
Foundation
— combination of spread footings and mat foundations;
— grade beams provided between core walls and individual columns to resist lateral sliding force;
— a basement level below the north volume with perimeter foundation walls.
Facade
— curved south façade — a metal panel system;
— horizontal girts spanning between the curved concrete walls positioned to create the form.
CLEANROOM AND LABORATORIES
— open space laboratory layout;
— laboratory zoning concept to keep the noise
emissions away from the laboratory work
zones;
— all equipment and fittings for the cleanrooms
located outside cleanroom area.

ENGINEERING AND SUSTAINABILITY
— media supply of plumbing and electric via a wallmounted media column, media cells, or from ceiling-suspended media columns;
— reinstallations and upgrades can be accomplished with minimal time and expense, and without operationally interfering with the adjacent laboratory or space;
— the location of the shafts allowing a logical structure of the MEP installation and clear space management concept.
Total Gross Area (m2) 6 194 Building height (m)19.6
