New York, NY, U.S.A., 9 May 2007 –The 24th Annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards, presented by the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) on 9 May 2007, recognized the Berlin Main Station, Underground Areas with an Award of Merit. This prestigious international design award was presented to principal lighting designer Dr. Thomas Müller of LichtVision GmbH in Berlin, Germany.
The award was issued in the monumental structures/public spaces category in recognition of the aesthetic and technical merits of the project. This year, over 100 projects were submitted, with 20 international projects receiving awards. Eight of the winning projects recognized were submitted in the monumental structures/public spaces category.
The new Berlin Main Station serves a dual purpose, combining Europe’s largest most modern rail transportation hub with the facilities of a major shopping center. The lighting design goals were to create a feeling of comfort and safety and to support visual clarity and orientation with an overall emphasis on system efficiency and maintainability. The lighting of elliptical ceiling cutouts combine with the functional linear platform lighting to provide rhythm and structure to the space.
The project was completed on budget and on schedule, opening in time to support Berlin’s role as co-host of the Soccer World Cup 2006. The lighting design concept is based on the interaction of functional linear lighting along the platforms with decorative lighting in elliptical ceiling cutouts at the top of the columns. The visually structuring character of the ellipses is enhanced by the blueish-white accent light, creating the impression of a skylight.
LichtVision GmbH also earned an Award of Excellence in this category for its Information Center in the Central Memorial for Murdered Jews.
