Neubau Wikingerschiffsmuseum in Roskilde / Nyt Vikingeskibsmuseum (DK)

Found in Roskilde Fjord in 1962, the five 11th century Viking vessels – the Skuldelev Ships – tell the story of a refined craft tradition, adventurous voyages, power, longing, international relations, and our strong connection to the sea. For decades, Erik Christian Sørensen’s iconic brutalist architecture has beautifully staged the ships with the fjord as a dramatic backdrop, and although it has now served its purpose, it will remain an important part of a new museum experience. With our proposal for the New Viking Ship Museum, we wanted to create a new synergy between the existing buildings, the fjord, the landscape, the harbour, and the city. The design is an abstract interpretation of the geometries and constructions principles of the Viking Age. Its circular shape embraces the inner museum harbour, forming a natural hinge that creates a coherent museum experience and harmonious movement through spaces and landscapes.
