The New Deichman Library

When designing the Library the following issues have been of special importance:
- That the Library offers multiple media and reader-experiences in a building with lots of light, air and spectacular views to the streets, the fjord, and the wonderful hills that surrounds Oslo.
- That the Library stands out clearly in the urban context and at the same time is woven into the urban fabric.
- That the various sightlines in the area are utilized to their full potential.
- That the buildings are robust to future development, ie the project’s possibility to be built in phases.
- That the Library is functionally flexible, a building for everybody.
- That the Library is future-oriented with regard to energy and environmental factors.
- That the Library plays an important role in the sequence of spaces from the Central Station to the Opera. And that it addresses people coming from east, north, west, south in Oslo.

Urban Connection

Urban Context and Sightlines
One of the main challenges when building on the Deichman axis is the cut away corner to make the Opera visible. We think that could be balanced out with a diagonal street. The diagonal catches the opening in the first of the Barcodebuildings and it relates to the entrance side of the Opera from this direction. A diagonal street connects into the existing urban fabric with pedestrian routes etc. Without the diagonals the Opera is concealed by the Deichman axis. Orthogonal streets will here give dead ends in both directions. The sightline from the Station is strengthened by letting the top of the Library cantilever towards “opera…” Likewise, we utilize the possibility to build up to 12 m height by using this area on ground floor and on C.8 for café/terraces. The upper deck is thereby more shielded from the traffic than the plaza on the ground. Also the views are excellent from the upper terrace

Urban Developments - Function A9
The ground floor level is mainly allocated to shops and restaurants. The upper floors are suggested to be used for offices and hotel/housing. The floors under the ground are used for parking and a conference center/cinema. The functions can be shared with the library. Together with the library, the skyline of the three buildings forms a unified backdrop for the Opera.

Library

The new Deichman library...
…is a house based on light and space and the specific diagonal views between library interior and outside streets. Cuts in floor connect the library with the outside street.
... is a house where the inner space is generated by the lightshafts.
... is a house which invites you into its magic inner world. Entrance courts invite into the ground floor and tempt you to explore the different zones.
…is a house for informal meetings, for big gatherings, for consultation, for contemplation …and a house that fulfills the very different acoustic requirements. The house has a potential to get quieter towards the top.
…is a house with specific themes and atmospheres, but still flexible for a variety of uses and a multiple choice of spatial division
…is a house that benefits from its unique position between Oslos green hillsides and the blue fjord. Framed views give to each floor an atmospheric direction.
…is a house where internal traffic is multi optional, but also positively encouraged. The biggest arrangements have the shortest traffic line.
…is a house where anything can happen and all are invited.

Materials and Construction

Facades: Translucent isolation (eg. kalwell) is combined with high quality glass in the big openings (“Oasis”).However the translucent wall also contains smaller panels with clear glass to create contact with the surroundings. The big openings have sunshading elements flush with the facade. In order to obtain a plain ceiling view, all technical elements are contained in the floor.
