Beurteilung durch das Preisgericht
This project doubled the size of a 1970s school on the same tight site while
keeping the existing school in operation throughout the construction.
To maximise playground area, the classroom block was raised on a bridge among the trees, increasing levels of daylight, ventilation and views; and creating an undercroft play-space the size of a sports hall.
The architects engaged with the school children throughout the process, worked with artists, helped with funding, formed a special relationship with the specialist supplier of the prefabricated timber panels (used to reduce disruption from noise and dust) and developed innovative design solutions throughout.
A parent has commented: 'We wanted a learning environment that was flexible …. we have a real sense of awe and wonder every time we come into the building.'
