Collection Building Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam

Neutelings Riedijk Architects proposes to organise the new collection-depot
building of the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam as an
“Artwarehouse” in the skyline of the industrial harbour city.

The slim tower with its small footprint allows the green Museumpark to remain as
open as possible. The tower creates a balanced spatial relation with the
neighbouring New Institute (former Dutch Architecture Institute) and Boijmans Van
Beuningen museum buildings and thus becomes a new icon along the
Museumpromenade.

The tower consists of two closed volumes that contain all stacked art depots. In
between lies a monumental open space to which all depots connect using large
loading doors. Through the use of oversized glass elevators and large moving
platforms the art handling is facilitated. The circulationspace is clearly visible from
the public lobby and generates a dynamic logistic spectacle within the city.

The base of the tower contains an open depot that can be visited and seen by the
public. The top of the tower is also open to the public and gives room to an
exhibition space, café and panoramic terrace. Due to this concept the art depots
can be organised compact and efficiënt, allowing the monumental inside space to
depict the importance and size of the “Rotterdam Collection” to the public.
