Esplanadeplein / Refurbishment of the Esplanade Square

With the entry ‘The Boeimenploin’, OMGEVING, in collaboration with Ney & Partners, Atelier Roland Jeol and ARA, won the competition for the refurbishment of the Esplanade Square in Aalst. The decision to submerge the parking on the square represents an important transformation in the northwestern edge of the trading center of Aalst. The winning design started from a large green carpet, from which essential connections and utilities were cut out. This leaves the square with an utmost green character. The existing bus stops in the square are merged into one and covered by an elongated slender canopy. In the coming months, the design will be refined and presented to the residents.
